Screening & Diagnosis

When you sign up for Resdent you get the option to order a few different types of Sleep studies. Every patient will have unique symptoms. So the first step is identifying a patient.

There are numerous ways to identify an at risk patient for snoring or sleep apnea. We recommend if you’re new to Sleep medicine, to do some of our free introductory courses to get a better idea of what to order when!

Level 2 Home Sleep Study

What is it?

A level 2 sleep study refers to a portable polysomnograph (PSG). Here we look at EEG, EOG, sometimes EMG for bruxism, heart rate, respiratory effort, nasal airflow, pulse oximetry, body position and sometimes more.

What can it diagnose?
  • Central sleep apnea, OSA, sleep-related hypoventilation disorders, and other sleep-related breathing disorders such as UARS.
  • REM behavior disorder, or other parasomnias (abnormal actions or behaviors while sleeping).
  • Idiopathic hypersomnia, narcolepsy, and other hypersomnolence disorders.
  • Non-24-hour sleep-wake syndrome, delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS), or advanced sleep phase syndrome and other circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders.
  • Bruxism, periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), restless legs syndrome (RLS), and other sleep-related movement disorders.
Why would I use this test?

Level 2 at home sleep studies are the most conclusive at home sleep studies and provide valuable differential diagnosis information. Ideally you would use this test for an initial assessment for a patient you suspect of having a sleep disorder. A physician will provide a report for the test with clear recommendations on treatment options.

Considerations

Depending on the region you are working in the cost of the study will vary. For study requests in Australia some patients may be eligible for bulk billing depending on the patient meeting eligibility criteria. To find out more please email us at hello@sleepapp.com.au.

Nightowl Home Sleep Study

What is it?

FDA approved sleep monitoring device validated against level 1 PSG. Based on Peripheral Arterial Tonometry (PAT), SpO2 and actigraphy signals; a combination recently found technically adequate by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

What can it diagnose?

NightOwl is an accurate predictor of AHI and can allow you as a practitioner to make better, informed, clinical decisions.

Whilst it can be used to diagnose Sleep Apnea directly, many of our dentists use the device for titration – having the patient perform one or more overnight sleep tests at home using the nightowl device while trying the oral appliance at different settings; and/or titrating the oral appliance overnight in a sleep disorders center bed, with a sleep tech gradually adjusting the settings until the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) reaches a clinically acceptable level

This approach works well in countries where patients require a referral from their physician or general practitioner for each and every sleep study. Nightowl tests can be setup in less than a minute and with the handy patient app, the patient can have the sleep report in your inbox the next day.

Why would I use this test?

Practitioners often use an initial screening tool to assess the likelihood of a patient having OSA. They may use the NightOwl as a specialist reported study or as a precursor to a PSG. The NightOwl is the most efficient and cost effective titration tool on the market. Accurate and objective titration of MAD’s is vital in successful outcomes for patients on therapy.
